Literal translations, non-singable

Translation by Anastasia, made in 2004:

Russia — our sacred state,
Russia — our beloved country.
Mighty will-power, great glory
Shall remain your honors for all time!

Praise our free Fatherland,
Long-lasting union of brotherly peoples,
Ancestor-given wisdom of the people!
Long live, Country! We are proud of you!

From the southern seas to the polar realm
Our forests and fields stretch.
You are one in the world! You are alone like that,
God-guarded native land!

Plenty of room for dreams and for life
The coming years are promising us.
Allegiance to our Motherland gives us strength.
So it had been, so it is, and so it always will be!

Translation by CNN, made in December 2000:

Russia, our holy country!
Russia, our beloved country!
A mighty will, a great glory,
Are your inheritance for all time!

Be glorious, our free Fatherland!
Eternal union of fraternal peoples,
Common wisdom given by our forebears,
Be glorious, our country! We are proud of you!

From the southern seas to the polar region
Spread our forests and fields.
You are unique in the world, inimitable,
Native land protected by God!

Wide spaces for dreams and for living
Are opened for us by the coming years
Faithfulness to our country gives us strength
Thus it was, so it is and always will be!

Translation by Zach Harden “with assistance of Babel Fish”, received in December 2004:

Russia — our sacred power,
Russia — our dear country.
Powerful will, the great glory
Your inheritance to all periods!

Be famous, the fatherland our free,
Fraternal peoples the union of age-long,
By ancestors this wisdom people!
Be famous, the country! We be proud by you!

From the South seas to the polar edge
Our forests and fields were stretched.
One you in the light! One you such —
Protected by God the native earth!

Wide space for the dream and for the life
Is opened for us by the coming years.
Our faithfulness to the fatherland gives force to us.
So it was, so there is and so it will be always!

Attempts at singable lyrics

(anyone dares to sing an English translation professionally and send me a recording?)

Version by Patrick McDougall (paddycake@hotmail.com), Canada, March 2005:

There wells from within us an anthem of praise
For the annals of courage our his’try displays.
We vanquished invaders and found, in their wake,
A renewal of faith in the path we must take.

Come, share a common destiny!
Take strength from our diversity
Forging a future for those yet to be.
Come, share a common destiny!
Take strength from our diversity
Forging a future for those yet to be.

This nation we cherish took root, we are told,
In the victories won by the brave and the bold.
Now, yearning for peace and a place in the sun,
Let us turn with a will to what’s still to be done.

Version by Vu Pham Minh Tuan (Vũ Phạm Minh Tuấn, Ву Фам Минь Туан, vivamita@gmail.com), Vietnam, July 2005:

For centuries in our hearts has stood a mighty faith:
Rassiya — sacred state, for ever for days.
There shines up a glory, there shines up a country.
So happ’ly and proudly, we’re honoured to say:

Be proud, my Motherland, beloved and brave homeland!
Union of peoples in long-lasting love.
    Oh, long live our homeland,
Long live our father’s mighty hands.
Great sky of Freedom, our glory above!

From forests to vast fields, we all belong to you.
Southern seas, northern lands, we all share the view:
“For us, you’re the only!”, forever do we say:
“Rassiya — holy state”, our love is for thee!

We set up the history and build up our own life,
For our hopes and our dreams are open to thee!
In faith of the Homeland, we will find the best way,
For it was, and it is, and will be always!

Version by anonymous contributor, July 2005:

Russia — our great union of many cultures,
    Russia — our beloved federation!
Long live the diversity of our nation,
Long live the unity of our peoples!

Be glorious, our great motherland! March on toward destiny!
    Great Federation of nationalities!
Triumph in our strength, the strength of diversity,
Glorious Russia — long live our homeland!

For centuries our nation has been in peril,
The dark storms thundered over the Great Kremlin.
But through the fires came a great unity,
A union that shall endure for all time!

The dark shadow of despotism is banished,
The sunrays of freedom shine throughout our land!
Our nation was created by the people,
United and mighty, our great motherland!

  • Postage stamp with anthem lyrics — issued in 2001, postage value of 2.5 roubles (ca. USD 0.1).
  • School exercise book with text of anthem on the back cover — a typical 12-pages double lined notebook for use in schools, manufactured in 2006. The back cover of exercise books made both in the USSR and in Russia often contains stuff that schoolchildren ought to memorize: a multiplication table, values of physical constants, texts of patriotic songs and the national anthem. Nowadays, however, it is sometimes replaced by commercial advertising.
